Yes, the scaffolding that covered the front of St. Peter’s Church in the
Vatican for the past two years is finally coming down. In fact, if
the Fabbrica di SanPietro kept to their schedule, which called for the
disrobing to be completed on September 18, it should all be gone by the
time you read this. Some of us haven’t seen the façade since arriving
in Rome, and nobody alive had seen it clean and in all of it’s glory.
Pope John Paul II will inaugurate the freshly scrubbed facade Sept. 30,
presenting the face that St. Peter's will show the world during the Roman
Catholic Church's Holy Year celebrations for the new millennium. For the
