The
Seven Hills of Rome: Every English schoolboy at the
turn of the 20th century could recite the names of Rome's traditional Seven
hills (--girls weren't expected to know such things.) So how did they remember?
They used a simple mnemonic (memory jogging) device to remember the first
letter of each hill, and here it is, so that we English speaking Romans
can remember it too:
Can
Queen
Victoria
eat
cold
apple
pie?
The first letters correspond to:
Capitoline,
Quirinal,
Viminal,
Esquiline,
Caelian,
Aventine,
and
Palatine,
or:
Capitolino,
Quirinale,
Viminale,
Esquilino,
Caelio,
Aventino,
e
Palatino
Other "unofficial" hills need not
be remembered.
